What Screen Reactions does

After being showcased at the Android Show a few weeks ago, Screen Reactions has officially landed in the Android 17 QPR1 Beta 4 release. The feature is baked directly into the system screen recorder, introducing a new "Show selfie camera" option alongside existing recording controls. This eliminates the need for external editing or third-party apps previously required on Pixel phones to achieve green screen video clips.

When enabled, Screen Reactions instantly toggles local microphone recording, though this can be disabled if desired. Users get a real-time preview immediately after activating the option, allowing them to frame themselves and prepare before starting the actual recording session.

Technical implementation and limitations

Screen Reactions functions exclusively when recording the entire screen; the feature is disabled when using the "Single app" recording option. This design choice ensures the selfie overlay integrates properly with the system-level recording interface.

A paint swatch tool accompanies the feature, currently offering six color variants for background customization: black, purple, red, blue, green, and orange. While functional, the limited palette has prompted hopes for future expansion or support for custom color selection.

Despite being processed on-device with the selfie camera, the subject isolation performs exceptionally well. The system achieves crisp cutouts that accurately track faces, shoulders, and even hands and other objects—impressive given it works on even the lower-resolution selfie cameras found in Pixel A-series devices.

Looking ahead

The integration represents a significant quality-of-life improvement for Pixel users who regularly create screen recording content. By handling everything locally within the native system app, it streamlines the workflow and enables instant sharing without post-production steps.
