Why Anthropic Pulled the Plug

The economics are stark: a single OpenClaw agent running full-tilt for one day can burn $1,000 to $5,000 in API costs. Under a flat-rate subscription at $20–$200 per month, Anthropic was absorbing nearly all of that difference.

Steinberger wrote on X: "Funny how timings match up. First they copy some popular features into their closed harness, then they lock out open source."

He's not wrong. Anthropic recently shipped Discord and Telegram messaging for Claude agents — features that made OpenClaw famous in the first place. Steinberger and investor Dave Morin reportedly tried to talk Anthropic out of the ban, managing only a one-week delay.

Anthropic's Mitigation Attempts

The company is trying to soften the blow:

  • One-time credit equal to your monthly plan price (redeemable until April 17)
  • 30% discount on pre-purchased "extra usage" bundles
  • API access remains available for those willing to pay per token

But for small-scale builders, the math doesn't work. One OpenClaw user on X noted that running two instances on the API would be "far too expensive to make it worth using" — and switched to a different model.

The Broader Implication

This is the first major move by an AI company to enforce a walled garden around its consumer subscriptions. If Anthropic succeeds, expect OpenAI, Google, and xAI to follow the same playbook: flat rates for the website, pay-per-token for anything else.
